Game hunting is the favorite outdoor past time of most American families; a legacy handed down by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1909. This was made possible when said President signed a legislation allocating over 42 million acres of national forests as the American outdoorsman's hunting land. The “Great Outdoor President” gave the citizens the right to hunt on this vast hunting land, bigger than all the royal estates of Europe combined.

This hunting land extends from the Andirondacks and the Blue Ridge of the East to the Sierra Nevada in California. This is a treat to the American outdoorsman as he is deluged with enormous hunting and fishing opportunities and the only requisite is physical stamina, investment in time and adapting to forest life. Thus, a carpenter in Indiana and Iowa can take his pick-up and treat his family to a deer hunting adventure in Colorado or perhaps officemates in Pennsylvania can try big bucks hunting in Western Wyoming.

After years of incessant hunting and wildlife abuse, dwindling game reserves brought concerns from environmentalists and specie extinction advocates which compelled Federal Estates to curb hunting privileges. Many States created management crews to oversee administration of hunting lands and in the process hunting permits were handed out. Endangered species were factually identified while some species merit a hunting reprieve during the mating season while hunting is limited to a couple of months for particular species. This scheme eventually increased game reserve population placing some game out of the endangered species watch list.

Hunting is not concentrated on public hunting lands like the one in Texas, New Mexico, or California. In existence are private hunting lands especially in Minnesota. Although these are open to most American hunting enthusiasts, specific permit fees are charged depending on the species a hunter intends to target. Failure of a person to follow regulation is subject to a fine of $2,500 apart from imprisonment to boot.

Practically all States adhere to a regular hunting land policy. Texas Parks and Wildlife for example have created maps for its 1,135,245 acres of public hunting lands found in 78 units and in 66 counties. Moreover, Annual Public Hunting (APH) permits are issued for hunting, fishing, camping that runs from September 1 to August 31 of the following year; apart from the distribution of Limited Public Use (LPU) permits for the purpose of camping, bird watching and hiking.
